"Encyclopedia Galactica" is a hugely improved hour of television from the series's nadir in the previous few episodes.
It is a nicely-structured episode that plays to its strengths: Carl Sagan directly dismantling the myths about UFOs; a clear, compelling story of humans cracking the hieroglyphic code, providing a nice metaphor for the larger ideas of the show; stimulating speculation about extant life; and a general sense of an expanded worldview and hope for the future that stays with us for days after a viewing. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode.

Meaning connection, for Leonardo connessione was ‘a recognition of and appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things and phenomena’.

MY GALACTIC IDENTITY - THE MILKY WAY
Viewed from a neighbouring galaxy I WHO AM NO THING but capacity here at centre, manifest over there as a spiral galaxy - the Milky Way. Spinning majestically like a slow Catherine wheel I am composed of perhaps 100 billion stars and am about 13.6 billion years old, give or take 800 million years! I am a fairly large spiral galaxy some 120,000 light years across and 3000 light years thick in my centre. I live in a cluster of about 30 galaxies known as the Local Group, the other large galaxy in this group, the Andromeda Nebula, being about 2 million light years away (from the Earth). Currently I am colliding with a small neighbouring galaxy, the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy, but not for the first time. It will probably pass through me without causing any serious damage. The most distant group of galaxies I've so far discovered is 13.5 billion light years away.
I am one among 100 billion or more galaxies (who knows?)
rushing outwards from some mysterious primal explosion.

An Ongoing Dialogue with Western Science
Along with his vigorous interest in learning about the newest developments in science, His Holiness brings to bear both a voice for the humanistic implications of the findings, and a high degree of intuitive methodological sophistication. As well as engaging personally in dialogue with Western scientists and encouraging scientific research into Buddhist meditative practices, he has led a campaign to introduce basic science education in Tibetan Buddhist monastic colleges and academic centers, and has encouraged Tibetan scholars to engage with science as a way of revitalizing the Tibetan philosophical tradition. His Holiness believes that science and Buddhism share a common objective: to serve humanity and create a better understanding of the world. He feels that science offers powerful tools for understanding the interconnectedness of all life, and that such understanding provides an essential rationale for ethical behavior and the protection of the environment.
His Holiness summarized these ideas in his Nobel prize acceptance speech:
"With the ever growing impact of science on our lives, religion and spirituality have a greater role to play reminding us of our humanity. There is no contradiction between the two. Each gives us valuable insights into the other. Both science and the teachings of the Buddha tell us of the fundamental unity of all things. This understanding is crucial if we are to take positive and decisive action on the pressing global concern with the environment."

1. To abhor something is, in itself, a waste as are all attachments.
2. Nothing is a waste but many things may be considered a waste!
3. Life is continuous, eternal, but not Earthly life.
