Dr. Clare W. Graves - Author of the Emergent Cyclical Levels of Existence Theory
Clare Graves wrote in 1974 that …
THE PRESENT MOMENT finds our society attempting to negotiate the most difficult, but at the same time most exciting, transition the human race has faced to date.
The future presents us with three distinct possibilities.
1. A massive regression back to our stone-age beginnings if we fail to stabilize our world's weapons and endangered resources.
2. A version of George Orwell's 1984, embodied in forms of BLUE-ORANGE-GREEN tyrannical, manipulative government with glossed over communitarian overtones.
3. The emergence of a Second Tier approach to business and society which would be fundamentally different from the one we know today, equipped to act locally and plan globally while acting globally and planning locally at the same time.
I am not saying in this conception of adult behavior that one style of being, one form of human existence is inevitably and in all circumstances superior to or better than another form of human existence, another style of being. What I am saying is that when one form of being is more congruent with the realities of existence, then it is the better form of living for those realities. And what I am saying is that when
one form of existence ceases to be functional for the realities of existence then some other form, either higher or lower in the hierarchy, is the better form of living. I do suggest, however, and this I deeply believe is so, that for the overall welfare of total man's existence in this world, over the
long run of time, higher levels are better than lower levels and that the prime good of any society's governing figures should be to promote human movement up the levels of human existence.
Clare Graves - Levels of Existence, Forms of Being
Michael,
thank you very much for this honoring of Clare Graves. The man who did his work at roundabout same time as Abraham Maslow and yet dived far more into systems complexity.
Graved work is completely under estimated in integral circles AND academia.
I spoke with Dorothea Zimmer, SDi Core groups for German speaking countries - and she confirmed that the first academic groups here are asking for information about Graves.
A promising sign.
Once again, thanks you vey much for presenting Glare Graves!
Damn it all, a person has the right to be who he is - Dr. Clare W. Graves
BRAVO!
Kids have the right too….now help me get that color guard started Michael.? Poppy would be a great advisor to the 4 year olds? :)
WELL for starters the BLUE-ORANGE-GREEN has to progress towards
BLUE-GREEN by way of Beck and Cowen's viewpoint that …
IF THE TRAP is to be unlocked and barriers broken down before
“ALL HELL breaks loose”- then these ACTIONS must take place …
1. PURPLE and RED must establish effective BLUE authority before ORANGE can sprout.
2. BLUE stability and ORANGE entrepreneur”ISM” must be present before GREEN social transformation is feasible.
3. Overarching YELLOW macro-management of the whole process IS essential.
I would then propose that …
the purposeful BLUE of evolutionary entrepreneurial “TruthForce”
combined with …
the relativistic GREEN of THE independent interdependence of “HumanBond”
WOULD PERTAIN ?
LET THE CHILDREN COME indeed
“Briefly what I am proposing is that the psychology of the mature human being is an unfolding, emergent, oscillating spiraling process marked by progressive subordination of older, lower order behavioural systems to newer, higherorder systems as an individual’s existential problems change.
Each successive stage, wave, or level of existence is a state through which people pass on their way to other states of being. When the human is centralized in one state of existence, he or she has a psychology which is particular to that state.
His or her feelings, motivations, ethics and values, biochemistry, degree of neurological activation, learning system, belief system, conception of mental health, ideas to what mental illness is and how it should be treated, conceptions of and preferences for management, education, economics, political theory and practice are all appropriate to that stage.”
Clare Graves
The same principles of Spiral Dynamics apply to a single person, an organization, or an entire society. Since it describes human nature in a universal sense rather than through personality types or racial, gender, and ethnic traits, the model provides a common language for grappling with both local and global problems.
It offers a unifying framework that makes
genuinely holistic thinking and actions possible.

As Don Beck addresses the United Nations - and WE contemplate The SPIRAL of LIFE - LET US NOT forget that the “FINAL SOLUTION” has to be ALL INCLUSIVE - & that IF OUR representatives at the UNITED NATIONS are NOT listening - the ONLY OPTION will be to - Let the PEOPLE decide - & as Don quite rightly says WE now comprise 6.7 billion individuals
An introduction to the work of Dr Graves, built with a beginner in mind. This was one of the first few podcasts done by the Radical Change Group (www.Radicalchangegroup.com) around 2006.
“When man is finally able to see himself and the world around him with clear cognition, he finds a picture far more pleasant. Visible in unmistakable clarity and devastating detail is man’s failure to be what he might be and his misuse of his world. This revelation causes him to leap out in search of a way of life and system of values which will enable him to be more than he has been. He seeks a foundation of self-respect, which will have value system rooted in knowledge and cosmic reality where he expresses himself so that all others, all beings can continue to exist. His values now are of a different order from those at previous levels: They arise not from selfish interest but from the recognition of the magnificence of existence and the desire that it shall continue to be.”
Dr Graves on human aggression:
'In the BO (2nd) system the only basic reason for war..is that you have invaded my property. You don't have any ideological war. You don't have war for gain. In the CP (3rd) system man fights for the fun of fighting. He is an aggressive "bastard" at that level of existence; that is his nature and this is what we must understand. In the DQ (4th) system he fights ideologically. In the ER (5th) system he fights for selfish economic gain. In the FS (6th) system he begins to question whether there is any purpose in any of these fights at all.'
'The data says that homicide as a behaviour of man disappears as the transition is made into the FS (6th) system.' (however) 'Suicide is highest in the FS (6th) system.' (editor's note: This last point is why we are seeing increasing rates of self-harm in western society).
Dr Graves on the 7th level of existence (in 1971)... "Since he values 'life', he looks at the world in the context of the many problems that life creates: different species, different values in different men. He sees the world and all its things, all its beings, all its people, as truly interdependent. He sees them entwined in a subjective-objective complex. So he values pluralism. He values that which will enable all animals, all plants and things to be, and all mankind to become."

‘I didn’t stand on the mountaintop of Sinai and get the word of Jehovah to develop this theory.
This point of view came about in a very long series of studies.’
Neo-Tribal Revivalist behaviour is characterised by, in Graves’ own words, ‘an almost mystical’ nature which relies upon feelings and intuition much more than any previous stage. It embraces the mystery of existence and accepts that there are things we can never know; all we can really do is to simply be.
