TOGETHER as [ONE] • COP26: CLIMATE DEAL SOUNDS

THE DEATH KNELL FOR COAL POWER - Boris Johnson

For every day that passes, this conclusion receives further confirmation • "The ruling classes of this world are constitutionally incapable of responding to the catastrophe in any other way than by expediting it. Unfortunately, COP26 did not produce any compelling reasons to revise that conclusion. Less than a week after the end of the summit, the Biden administration held the largest federal offshore drilling auction in US history.

“The administration has more than sufficient authority under the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act to cancel this lease sale.”

There is little to suggest that any other government signing the Glasgow Pact will behave differently

As COP26 entered its final stretch, many of those there in Glasgow were in a reflective mood, considering what had been achieved at the summit — and the huge amount that had not. One thing on many people’s minds was the unprecedented business presence at COP26, and the corresponding influence that big companies have had on the conversation on the ground. For Jules Kortenhorst, a veteran COP-goer and head of the influential non-profit consultancy RMI, businesses’ interest in climate action is much welcomed — but also a trend to be handled with care.

As COP26 moves to its final stages, with several key outcomes still to be negotiated, attention will invariably turn to whether it has been a success. Ultimately, this will depend on whether our leaders are truly committed to keeping 1.5 degrees of global warming within reach and ditching our reliance on fossil fuels. These are worrying times but joining COP26 in Glasgow with Soil Association colleagues was a joyous experience. The crowds, which included many young people, that gathered across the globe demonstrated there is a vigorous movement who care about leaving a healthy planet for future generations.
We must now see action, implementation, and genuine leadership from the UK to close the gap between rhetoric and policies. Read on to hear our take of the COP and how we’ve been involved.

A board member of a new MP-backed ‘Net Zero Watch’ campaign group has said today that “global warming is not a problem”, defended burning fossil fuels, and said carbon dioxide’s “principal effect” is the growth of plants.

Net Zero Watch (NZW), which launched last month, presents itself as a reasonable campaign to scrutinise the impact and cost of the UK government’s net zero policies. The group has been quoted in the media and retweeted by prominent anti-net zero MPs Steve Baker and Craig Mackinlay.

However, NZW board member Lord Nigel Lawson, a long-term organiser of UK climate science denial, has written an article for this week’s Spectator magazine denying climate science and rejecting the need to cut carbon emissions. It comes during the COP26 UN climate summit in Glasgow.

Experts said the article’s “prehistoric arguments” prove that Net Zero Watch is really “a front for tired old climate change denial”.
