ies, we sit down with some of today's most notable thinkers, teachers, and leaders, discussing the many ways they are catalyzing the Integral vision in their lives, in their hearts, and in their work.
Don Edward Beck, Ph.D., is Co-founder of The National Values Center in Denton, Texas, and President and CEO of The Spiral Dynamics Group, Inc. Beck co-authored The Crucible: Forging South Africa's Future (with Graham Linscott, l991) and Spiral Dynamics: Mastering Values, Leadership & Change (with Christopher Cowan, l996). He also writes a "Sports Values" column for the Dallas Morning News and appears often in the media regarding issues related to values, sports, and racial divides.
Here Don offers an intimate glimpse into his own life and career. He discusses the current phase of his work: traveling the world and applying Spiral Dynamics to various geo-political "hotspots" all over the planet. He offers his own ideas about healthy models of society, the crucial distinction between stages of consciousness and the contents of those stages, and the importance of preserving many of the early stages of development that are so often seen as primitive and obsolete. He then goes into considerable depth around the specifics of the Palestine-Israel conflict, describing the needs and problems on both sides of the divide, his hands-on involvement with both nations, and the remarkable receptivity with which his work has been met. At a time when tensions in the Middle East can seem so hopelessly combustible, it is encouraging to see Integral seeds being planted in such surprisingly fertile soil, offering us all a much-needed exhale as we wait to see how evolution will continue playing itself out in this difficult region of the world.

d human development communities turned to him for answers. They wanted him to duplicate what he had done in South Africa in this troubled part of the world. The Middle East steered the passions of several conscientious leaders, including Ken Wilber and many in the Integral & Spiral Dynamics communities. After the events of 9/11 and the ensuing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the search for more conscious and sustainable solutions went into high gear. And, while Dr. Beck was known the world over for his involvement in South Africa’s transition from apartheid, the details of his ten-year involvement had remained obscure to those outside his circle of influence. In 1991, with South African journalist Graham Linscott he wrote what amounted to an academic book about the experience. The book was titled The Crucible, Forging South Africa’s Future, which he dedicated to his friend and mentor, Clare W. Graves. Its content and the experience were the predecessors to the book Spiral Dynamics, which brought forth the value systems framework to the world. By the early 2000s, Dr. Beck was witnessing the global success of the Spiral Dynamics framework and, based on its teachings, he was becoming a renowned geopolitical advisor. But, as he told Elza during their first meeting, he was itching to apply it in the field where it made a difference in people’s lives as it had in South Africa.

eats and fears from a Spiral
Dynamics-Integral perspective. More people per capita have been
exposed to Spiral Dynamics in the Netherlands than in any other
country. We had long believed that we had encountered more complex
thinking among the Dutch (and Northern Europeans in general)
than anywhere. We believed that if we could assist our friends in
dealing with this crisis within their country, they could discover
the models and processes for confronting and dissolving
ethnic/religious/cultural conflicts elsewhere.
Their collective pain would be everybody’s eventual gain.
